Green Spaces

‘Green Spaces’ was funded by Tesco Bags of Help grant in 2017. It took place in Wedgwood House, Bury St Edmunds and was aimed at improving the environment around the Mental Health unit in order to aid in recovery. Patients discussed and chose plants for two outside areas, together with a Landscape Architect.

Patients were encouraged to draw and photograph plants and then to paint their own picture on a marine ply board. These pictures, together with donated paintings from local artists and school children, form an outdoor exhibition in the main courtyard and Abbeygate courtyard providing interesting focal points and initiating dialogue amongst patients and staff.

In addition to planted areas outside Wedgwood House, herbs, shrubs and ferns were planted in the Northgate and Southgate courtyards; providing aromatic areas and increasing the number of insects visiting the courtyard.

The fund also enabled the purchase of tools for the patients to maintain the areas, with supervision, over a number of years.
